What is Medicaid?

Medicaid is a program to provide health coverage to the poor, the young and the elderly as a part of the United States Social Security System. It’s run as a partnership between the states and the federal government.  Every state has a Medicaid program, but they can be called something different in each state. Medicaid is called “Medi-Cal" in California, "MassHealth" in Massachusetts, and "TennCare" in Tennessee.

Medicaid is important for funeral planning because qualifying for Medicaid is one way that those over age 65 can get assistance paying for nursing home care when they are in need of it. To qualify for Medicaid, many people need to reduce the amount of assets they have so that they qualify for assistance. One of the ways that they can do this is to preplan and prepay their funeral expenses.
